Why Does My Weight Fluctuate During My Period?

Weight loss

Even those most dedicated to their weight loss journey are going to notice fluctuations in their weight. There are a few reasons for this, and there’s not much we can do about it. You might have noticed weight fluctuations around a certain time of month… every month.

Hormonal Changes

Our hormones run wild when we’re on our period! It’s a complex process that messes with our estrogen and progesterone levels, and our body lets us know about it. If you find you’re gaining 1-2kg during your menstrual cycle, you’re not alone!

A few days before your period, your estrogen and progesterone levels decrease rapidly. These two hormones control the way your body regulates fluid, so when these pesky hormones fluctuate, your body retains more water. We know this as water weight, and it is so common — up to 92% of women will experience this during their period!

Cravings & Overeating

It’s no secret we experience cravings in or around that time of the month, and once again we have our pesky hormones to thank. In the week before your period, progesterone levels increase, and that hormone is an appetite stimulant — so as it rises, so does your appetite!

Estrogen regulates serotonin, another hormone that regulates mood and reduces appetite. When our estrogen levels drop (right before your period) so will your serotonin levels! When our serotonin levels are low, we start craving sugar-rich foods! The last thing we need on a weight loss journey.

Magnesium Levels

Once you start your period, your magnesium levels gradually decrease. Magnesium, amongst other things, regulates your body’s blood sugar and hydration levels. Low levels of magnesium can lead to dehydration, and dehydration can disguise itself as hunger! It can also lead you to crave sugar even though you could just be thirsty.

If you’re finding yourself gaining a kilo or two during or around the time of your period, it’s completely normal. Go easy on yourself! A lot of us experience cramps, bloating and general discomfort during our period, so don’t worry about a little weight fluctuation, it’s temporary and is not going to affect your progress in the long run.
